In the men’s and women’s team compound archery competitions at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China on Thursday, Indian archers took home gold medals.
The Chinese Taipei trio of Yi-Hsuan Chen, I-Jou Huang, and Lu-Yun Wand lost to the Indian women’s compound archery team of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Aditi Swami, and Parneet Kaur 230-229 in a fiercely contested gold medal match to take home the top podium at the Asian Games 2023 archery.
Prior to that, Hong Kong China was easily defeated by the top-seeded Indian women’s compound archery team in the quarterfinals, 231-220. The Indian trio, the current world champions in the division, easily defeated Indonesia 233-229 in the semifinals. After defeating Indonesia in the bronze medal match, the Republic of Korea finished on top of the podium.
After placing third in Incheon 2014 and second in Jakarta 2018, it was India’s first compound archery team gold medal at the Asian Games. All three medal-winning teams have included Jyothi Surekha Vennam, who will compete in the compound women’s individual final later this week. At the Asian Games 2023 archery competitions, Jyothi Surekha Vennam has already taken home two gold medals. On Wednesday, she won the mixed team compound gold with Ojas Pravin Deotale.
The men’s team, which included Ojas Pravin Deotale, Abhishek Verma, and Prathamesh Jawkar, followed suit with another top podium performance later in the day. In the gold medal final, the Indian trio upset the top seeds from South Korea, Jaehoon Joo, Jaewon Yang, and Kim Jongho, 235-230.
The Indian three had earlier on Thursday defeated Chinese Taipei 235-224 and Bhutan 235-221 in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. In the preliminary round on Monday at the Fuyang Yinhu Sports Center, the trio defeated Singapore by a score of 235-219.The individual men’s compound archery final will also feature Ojas Pravin Deotale and Abhishek Verma on Saturday.
